CHAPTER 5 ESTERIFICATION OF PHTHALIC ANHYDRIDE WITH nBUTANOL Phthalate esters such as dioctyl phthalate, diisoamyl phthalate Esterification of phthalic anhydride with nbutanol was carried out in the liquid phase over AlMCM41 (50, 100 and 150) and H zeolite with hexanol to phthalic anhydride and the time on the synthesis of dioctyl phthalate were studied.

It is shown that the time and substrate molar ratio play a significant role on the improvement of the yield of the synthesis of dioctyl phthalate.

Time and molar ratio show a positive effect on the yield of the reaction. Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) is a kind of widely used plasticizer. The catalysts used in traditional synthesis process of DOP were mainly sulfuric acid, titanate and solid acid.

The sulfuric acid cannot be reused and have other disadvantages such as equipment corrosion, more byproducts, tedious workup procedure and environmental problem. In this paper, mesoporous MCM41 and AlMCM41(SiAl 100, 70, 40, 10, 5) molecular sieves were synthesized by direct hydrothermal process and characterized by various analytical techniques.

ABSTRACT Esterification of phthalic anhydride with 2ethylhexanol and 1butanol has been investigated using aluminum oxidesodium hydroxide catalyst system and tetranbutyltitanate (TnBT) catalyst for comparison.
